The second-largest state in Europe by geographical size, Ukraine is located in beautiful Eastern Europe and is home to a rich culture that attracts students and travelers from around the globe. The country is actually relatively new, only having been recognized in 1991 as an independent nation. In fact, it wasn’t a part of the EU until early 2016.

However, that doesn’t mean the country lacks a fascinating history that lends to its appeal to foreigners. With incredibly hospitable and welcoming locals, visitors will feel right at home in the country that offers a diverse and varied landscape, stunning historical city centers, and world-class academic institutes.

Despite its having entered into the EU almost 2 years ago, Ukraine uses its own currency - the Ukrainian hryvnia - which compares to the US Dollar at a rate of 1 USD to 27 UAH.

So, what exactly should students in the country expect to spend? On average, here is what you should plan for:

One Year of Study in Ukraine:

Ukraine has one of the most affordable education systems in Europe, and even the world. Students with an interest in the country as a study destination will be encouraged by the high quality of education offered to them at such a low cost.

On average, students venturing to the country can expect tuition fees to fall between 1500 USD to 3500 USD annually for engineering, science and management programs, and 3500 USD to 4000 USD for medical programs. It is estimated at $250 to $400 to cover the cost of on-campus accommodation, food, books etc.

Overall Cost of Living in Ukraine

While generally far lower than other top student destinations in Europe and around the globe, Ukraine’s cost of living will vary slightly depending on the decisions made by students. Enrolling in a university that provides on-campus accommodation, especially one in which the cost of these services is included in the tuition fees, will allow students to save more money than those looking to live in flats separated from their universities.

However, students looking to live independently from their chosen institution can rest assured that, even in city centers (which are naturally more expensive than rural or suburban areas), the cost of rent is low - even reaching prices as affordable as 200-250 USD for a shared apartment.

Poland is ranked 111th in a list of the world’s most expensive countries, and its major cities of Kiev and Odessa fall at numbers 324 and 340, respectively. Students in urban and suburban settings, alike, will experience a high quality of life for a low cost of living.
