Charles University, known also as Charles University in Prague, or historically as the University of Prague, is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic, and was founded in 1348. Charles University does not have one joint campus. The academic facilities occupy many locations throughout the city of Prague and three of the faculties are located in other cities. The historical main building from the 14th century called Carolinum is situated in the Old Town of Prague and constitutes the university's center. Besides boasting a plethora of student societies, the University also has several sports complexes and other interesting places where people can meet and spend their free time. Research and teaching at Charles University is scattered over many different sites, complicating the life of the University as a cohesive academic community.
