Stony Brook University, officially known as Stony Brook University of New York, is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system and is located on Long Island. Founded in 1957 as a high school mathematics and science teacher training college, the university began in Oyster Bay, Long Island, on the grounds of a former Gilded Age estate, and moved to a new site near the historic village of Stony Brook in 1962.
