About the university

Bangor University founded in 1884 comes with a long tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on the student experience. At the school, there are around 11,000 students currently study at the University, with 650 teaching staff based within 23 Academic Schools. According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, Bangor University is ranked in the top 40 in the UK for research. The REF recognized that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for UK universities. Bangor University has achieved a Gold Award, the highest rating possible in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the only un

iversity in Wales to achieve this standard. The TEF assessment considers teaching quality, learning environment, student outcomes and learning as core principles of focus. “We were judged to deliver consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for our students and our teaching is of the highest quality found in the UK.” The student experience at Bangor University is vibrant and diverse, with more than 150 Student’s Union Clubs and Societies covering a range of interests, activities and sports offering various options to engage and enrich student life. As student membership is free all students can take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities offered. Moreover, all students are given support from the moment they arrive so they are advised and supported on matters relating to finances, housing to disability support, dyslexia, study skills and local faith provisions. Every year hundreds of second and third year students are trained as Peer Guides (mentoring) to welcome the new students to Bangor in a way to settle them in.

University Location

Bangor, located in northwest Wales, is the oldest city in Wales and one the smallest in the United Kingdom. Most of the population is comprised of students attending Bangor University, an establishment with roots that date back to 1884. Bangor has two rivers within its borders, the River Adda, which only appears aboveground in the western extremities, and the River Cegin, which enters Port Penrhyn at the eastern edge of the city. Bangor is a hub for music and art, with performances of classical

music put on quite regularly. Notable sites include Garth Pier, the second largest pier in Wales, and the Bangor Cathedral, a historic structure set in a sloping oval churchyard.
