Ulyanovsk is a western Russian city beside the Volga River, known as the birthplace of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. There are several museums and memorials scattered around town dedicated to Lenin's legacy. Dig a little deeper and Ulyanovsk's apolitical charms begin to emerge. The city was founded as Simbirsk in the 17th century and for a while it was a favorite retreat for young nobles. Many young aristocrats spent summers here dreaming of great endeavors while lounging between noontime breakf
asts and late-afternoon naps. Today, the city flourishes as a place of history and art, with the Ulyanovsk Regional Art Museum exhibiting Russian paintings and sculpture in an ornate red-and-white building. Though it is not a common tourist destination, Ulyanovsk’s heritage and art, along with its nature and parks, keeps life in the city increasingly interesting.
